Willcox & Gibbs Chainstitch Machine |
| This Willcox & Gibbs chainstitcher has quite nice decals, plus a huge (industrial?) motor and several specialty feet/accessories.
| The previous owner says: "These machines do not have a bobbin under the bed, but has a looper that holds the lower loop of thread open until the next stitch, like a feed sack. Original case, machine base and attachments. The working foot controller is not original. I did find an original foot controller, but it is in bad shape, needs rebuilding, a bag of parts is included." |
| The case is in fairly rough shape, but the corner brasses are wonderful. Handle is missing, just one of the posts remains. Ouch. |
| The machine was motorized at some point, perhaps originally? The original instructions for adding the motor are pasted inside the lid of the case. |
The motor reads: Westinghouse Motor made for Willcox & Gibbs Sewing Machine Co. New York N.Y. U.S.A. Type AD 110 Volts-DC & AC to 70 cycles It's heavy! |
| The number 774 is stamped into the name plate... and the number A597315 is stamped below the stitchformer. I assume the latter is the machine serial number; not sure what the former is. |
| It's a very pretty machine. The usual patent numbers and dates, along with needle sizes, are stamped into the bed. |
| The decals are in good shape for its age, the machine as a whole shows that it's been used. |
| A number of bits and pieces are in the case, including two narrow-hemmer feet (very strange looking compared to those for "regular" machines), a ruffler, seam guide, two wrenches, and something I can't identify, that might be just a part of something, like a binder or tucker. |
| This machine recently joined the collection of another old-machine appreciator. |
