This is the only consumer machine that is generally regarded as semi-industrial. The Pfaff company originally described it as intended "for domestic use and home workers," which says that they built it to stand up to more than the typical home-sewing jobs. These machines are highly prized today by folks who work with heavy fabrics, such as canvas, Sunbrella, and garment leather. The 130 will handle up to size 69 nylon thread in a size 16 or 18 needle.

Please note that this is NOT a true industrial sewing machine, despite some of the claims you may see in other listings for the 130. What it IS, is exceptionally heavy-duty for a consumer machine. There is a perception that "industrial" means "heavy-duty," and that simply is not true. Many industrial machines cannot sew heavy materials at all; industrials are built with specific tasks in mind, and built to do that single task fast and for long stretches. If the task is sewing lingerie, for instance, obviously it won't be suitable for heavy leathers and canvas, despite being a true "industrial" machine. It's an important distinction.

This machine was in excellent mechanical condition when found, but the paint (as on so many of these 130s) had crazed. The paint on this particular machine was in such bad shape that it would have been impossible to sew on it; fabric would have caught in the sharp paint chips. That might be why it was in such good shape mechanically? It just wasn't used much?

The original handwheel on these 130s is a small, lightweight plastic deal. It doesn't make a lot of sense, given the power these machines are capable of. So I changed out the plastic wheel for a nice, heavy metal one that was machined to fit. You can see the original one at lower right in the photo:

The unique cleated belt is one of the design factors that gives the Pfaff 130 such good piercing power.
